Sacbrood Disease

Sacbrood is a viral disease that appears in spring and early summer.

Symptoms

  • Uncapped or partially capped dead larvae.
  • Dead larvae appear bloated.
  • Larvae change colour from white to brown.
  • The larval head is darker than the rest of the body.
  • The larval skin is hard and leathery.

Treatment

Because sacbrood is a viral infection, there is no treatment. Manage the hives to minimize stress. Requeening may be necessary if the hive is heavily infected.
