The Drone Bees

A drone is a male bee whose only function is to mate with virgin queens from other hives. Drones are created from unfertilized eggs, meaning each has only the DNA of the queen. A drone lives a life of relative luxury. He is not responsible for hive duties such as nursing, cleaning, or foraging, and he is fed by worker bees. In summer, a hive may have 200 to 300 drones, but in autumn drones are driven out to reduce the strain on the colony's resources.
